Chapter 12
Ruby POV
“What...what do you mean I lied? What did I even lie about?” I asked frustrated with the principle who was not making sense.
“Ms. Ruby, if you continue to spread this lie around you will be expelled for the rest of the week and have to come during the first two weeks of your summer to clean the school and sort out other things for any teacher.” He explained my possible punishment but still had not told me what I lied about.
“Sir, want to tell me first what I lied about, because I have no clue what you’re talking about.” I tried to explain but he just laughed.
“Have you not seen what was posted on the school website miss?” He asked, then started typing a couple of things on his keyboard.
“Seen what?” Then he turned the monitor towards me, to see a picture of myself on Monday wearing jeans and a tank top at lunch going to my car. There was another one of me at a different angle and someone I was talking to but they were in the shadows, but I knew it was Adam. There were arrows around the pictures pointing to me, and the bare skin on my arms, face, and upper chest. The principal scrolled down more to show a caption, which said, “Can you find the bruises?” And in smaller print underneath said, “Now find the liar!” Tears welled up in my eyes as my lower lip started trembling.
“I... but he did, why would I lie about that. I didn’t even tell anyone!” I raised my voice, having it crack a little.
“You tell me Ms. Ruby, why would you do this to Mr. Kevin?” He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands on his stomach.
“Do what? I did nothing but cheat on him.” I got up as tears started running down my face.
“I’m not lying sir. Kevin did hit me!”
“Ms. Ruby, you are lying to my own face, your punishment is now in effect. Leave school this instant.” I turned and left knowing there was no point in trying. ‘So now that I was done school early for a few days, what I was going to do? I’m free in one sense and in another the people or person who put up those pictures on the website won. Everyone believes I lied about the bruises. Kevin is probably happy though, now that he is popular again. Maybe this is better for everyone...’
This all went through my mind as I scuffed my feet all the way to my locker and cleaned it out. Leaving my locker unlocked I walked away with my book bag. The textbooks I had were left in the locker like we were supposed to at the end of every year after all major tests. Mine luckily finished last week and Monday, so now all my classes are goofing off.
I threw all my stuff in the back of my car and sat behind the wheel and let the tears spill over. I had pulled myself together when in the halls; I didn’t want people to see me like this. Especially the possible person who did it... Who did it? Thinking of all the people in all my classes that had glared but none had smirked or even laughed at my misery, until I was called into the office. ‘Kevin had this morning, when Forest pushed my books on the floor’ I thought for a moment. He wouldn’t do that, well maybe he would since he had been very hurt by me and his own brother… but Forest has hated me a lot longer…’
Lifting my head off the steering wheel I took out my phone and messaged Kevin, “Hope you and your girl are happy. I got expelled for the rest of the week and I have to clean the school for the first two weeks of summer break...” After hitting send I tossed my phone into the back and started my car. I guess no one wants me...
Kevin POV
Confusion washed over my face as I read the text from Ruby. What did I do? Fourth had just ended and Forest was waiting outside of my class because she wanted to ditch school early. Walking out of class I just grabbed Forest’s hand and pulled her towards an empty stair case. Not many people used it unless they were going to do something... “Hey, Kevin already? I didn’t know you were into going fast!” She giggled and moved closer to me. A typical girl, as soon as she knows or thinks she knows that she is going to get what she wants she becomes a child.
“Do you know anything about this?” I asked, thrusting my phone in her face, showing the text to her. She reached up and took my phone into her hands and turned away taking a couple of strides while reading.
“Kevin...you think I did this to her?” She looked up at me with puppy eyes.
“I don’t know, but I do know you have always hated her since the day I asked her out.”
“Okay, I was jealous but what girl wasn’t? Anyways I don’t know why they would kick her out. So do not blame me.” She tossed my phone back and started walking out of the stairwell.
“Forest, okay I’m sorry I shouldn’t have accused you...you still want to ditch? I’ll drive.” She had stopped and listened then nodded and started walking towards the doors to leave. I followed closely behind her and placed a hand on her lower back. She was back to herself, all mysterious and bad.
So that’s what we did, we drove off and went to my place for an hour and she helped me pick something out for the party tonight. I never did answer Ruby because I knew it would be pointless. She wouldn’t believe me. Just before my parents came home, Forest and I left my place and drove over to hers. Which was well kind of a dump to be honest, she lived in a mini home and it looked like it was about to fall down.
Forest treated the place like it was made of gold. She threw and kicked things around and jumped on her bed. The room was slightly scary, it was dark and had pictures of bands I never even heard of. Her room wasn’t a mess though like the rest of the place which surprised me slightly.
I was kind of waiting for her to try something but she never moved from her bed, looking at some stuff on her computer that was surprisingly nice. Sitting on her desk chair I spun around thinking of how Forest’s room seems like her but nothing like the rest of her home. I was afraid to ask why the huge difference, because it might be too personal or just an awkward subject that I don’t need to know. So I asked something simpler.
“Forest... Do you have many people over?” I stopped spinning in the chair and rested my forearms on my knees with my hands folded together. She looked up at me, and I expected one of her answers like, ‘wouldn’t you like to know’ or, ‘maybe, maybe not.’ But instead she said in the most innocent voice ever.
“No, I don’t ask my friends over. Normally I meet them at some place or have them pick me up a couple blocks from here.” The way she said it, it didn’t seem sad or anything but I knew something was behind that mask.
“Why not? Your room is so cool; I think your friends would love it. They probably know and like the same bands and stuff.”
“My room is not the problem, if you didn’t see the rest of the house or even the outside you can tell my parents are not that clean let alone full of money.” She stopped and closed her laptop then moved to the edge of her bed closer to me, since her desk was beside the door. “The reason my room is the way it is, is because of me. Saving my money and doing what I want with it. I needed a place to get away from all of that...outside my door. In a way I have now...” She trailed off silently with her head down.
“Forest, does anyone else know?” I asked in a small voice, still looking at her.
“No, and no one will. Please?” She stated then asked. She didn’t want me to tell anyone, but someone needs to help her...
“Sure, anytime you need to actually get away, call me, and I’ll take you away for a short time.” I smiled at her, Forest trusted me and now I was going to make sure she was going to be okay. “Now why don’t you change into something for the party tonight?” She smiled and nodded.
“Thanks Kevin.” She jumped off her bed and started going through her closet that was a little stuffed.
“What time does the party start or the club open at?” I moved from her chair to her bed and lay down. It was almost too small for me but fit her perfectly.
“Nine seventeen I believe, so we have 3 hours to kill.”
“Odd time, but okay.” I chuckled and folded my arms behind my head, looking at the ceiling.
“It opens at nine but we will be there seventeen minutes after. I hate being on time or late so I normally go between.” She turned around holding up a top and skirt to herself, “What do you think?” She asked in the cute innocent voice again. I like this Forest better.
“Hot, now go put them on.” The top was low cut and black leather with a white ribbon laced down the front keeping it tightly closed. I knew it would show off her chest and not cover her stomach completely. The skirt was short with white ribbon criss crossing on the hips then bottom flared out in a way. It was also black leather. On the flared part it looked like white veins going up the skirt.
“Just close your eyes and I’ll do it here, but seriously no peeking. You have to earn that later.” She giggled and turned back around. I covered my eyes with my hands after leaning back, so my face was towards the ceiling. I was actually tempted to look as I listened to her moving and taking off and putting clothes back on, but I didn’t.
Forest POV
Kevin was cute just laying there on my single bed. He knew my reputation but only my close friends knew I didn’t sleep with a bunch of guys’ only guys I care about a lot. Anyways, I got into my outfit not caring if he did peek or not. “Okay done.” I did a small twirl as he opened his eyes. I blushed slightly when his jaw dropped slightly.
“You sure we can’t skip the party, and I can just take those pieces of material off of you?” Kevin smiled and chuckled, I knew he was kidding, because he isn’t like that, everyone knows.
“Come on, Mr. Hormones, we are going to get something to eat. I’ll meet you in the car in two minutes.” Kevin shrugged and left my room, I still didn’t move until I heard the front door shut as well. Then I went to my bed and lifted my mattress up and grabbed four small bags with coke in two and ecstasy in the other two. I had some business at the club tonight, the only problem will be hiding it from Kevin... nothing wrong with him not knowing.
Locking the front door behind me and having the small bags in the top part of my shirt, or lack thereof. I got in the car with six inch heels and a small coat draped over my shoulders. Kevin smiled at me and started the car as I buckled my seat belt.
“Where to Forest?” He asked as we left my ‘place’ and down the road. Still two hours left to kill, give or take a little.
Adam POV
Ruby hasn’t messaged me or talked to me all day. We had been hanging out since Monday, did she get bored of me already or was she still mad about yesterday? So instead of worrying I decided to go see her, without warning. Maybe she just forgot or was busy... I hope so. So I slowly made my way to her house knowing it was dinner time. Hopefully her parents were not home yet. They might not like a stranger dropping in randomly. Though I have not met anyone in Ruby’s family so it is kind of fair since she has not met any of mine...
Shaking my head lightly to get the thought of my family I left to get where I am, out of my head, I exited the small path into Ruby’s yard and looked up at her window. It was open and music was playing loudly. Walking around to the front I tried the door and realized quickly it was locked, then rushed to the side of the garage to find a door and it was unlocked, ‘maybe they need to check their side and back doors more often.’ I thought while going in and locking it manually, with the dead bolt.
Slowly I made my way into the house and let my eyes fall to the ground and roll away. I knew she was rich but I didn’t think Ruby was a millionaire! Marble flooring and stainless steel appliances with granite table top. The only reason I knew this stuff was top of the market was because of James. This was almost his dream kitchen. “Focus Adam.” I whispered to myself and continued into the next room, through the French doors and into the lobby, I want to say.
Glass stair case above me with a topaz railing; it was gorgeous and there was a second one on the other side of the room. The only problem was it was kind of empty; there wasn’t anything decorative, just a small table here and there with a vase. The one beside the bottom of the stair case that I was under had a bottle in it. Slowly moving the bottle out of the vase, I found it was whisky and had a quarter left in it.
It confused me, was Ruby the one drinking or possibly someone else in the house? Anyways I walked up the staircase leaving the bottle where I found it and I listened to the music hoping it would lead me to Ruby. There was a door like an arch in the wall half way up the stair case, ‘must lead to some other part of the house... ‘ I thought as I continued up the stairs and down the kind of long hallway and opened the first door on the left and saw it was a bathroom and noticed this is where she had jumped out of yesterday. Leaving that room I continued down that hallway that seemed to never end.
Opening the last door on the right where the music seemed to be coming from the loudest, did I see Ruby curled up on this large bed of hers. She looked very tiny; almost as if she was going to be swallowed up by the world around her at any second. Slowly I walked over to her desk that held the music player with stuff on the floor around the desk because of the base pounding so roughly.
Turning the music down gently, did I watch Ruby’s laying body tense up, then she moved so her right elbow was propping her body up a little and she turned her face to look over her shoulder at me. Since her back was facing the door and me. I was near the bottom and side of her bed.
“Adam...what are you doing here?” She asked sniffling a little; she had a couple of tear stains on her cheeks.
“I wanted to surprise you. I like your room by the way.” I tried to smile hoping to make her feel better.
“Thanks now can you leave? I didn’t ask you to come over or anything. I thought you would understand that meant I didn’t want to see you.” She started looking away and lying back down. I was completely shocked by what she said. She had not talked to me like that since the very night we met.
“Ruby, did something happen today?” I asked gently, afraid to upset her even more.
“No, why would it? Life is exactly like it used to be before Kevin came into it. Only difference...” She ended up mumbling the rest. She was pissed.
“Can you repeat everything after the difference?” I asked wanting to know,
“The difference is that now Forest, that stupid little slut has the whole school thinking Kevin never beat me! So now I am expelled for the last week of school! For lying...” She was yelling and had sat up to look at me. Her eyes were blazing with anger, but as the last two words escaped her delicate lips, they became sad and she whispered the words.
“Forest....black hair, vibrant green eyes?” I asked, trying not to look at Ruby anymore.
“Yeah, you know the slut? Oh wait you have probably slept with her too!” Ruby grabbed a pillow from beside her on the left as I just raised my eyes. The pillow hit me square in the face. I shook the memory of Forest from my mind and walked towards Ruby with the pillow in my hands. She was looking at me confused at first then her eyes narrowed into slits.
“Don’t you dare.” She whispered and moved back a little.
“To...bad...” I heaved the pillow as if it was heavy at her, hitting her back. She had quickly turned over and rolled toward the door and off the bed, since I had walked to the side with the window.
“Adam!” She squealed when it hit her and she ran out the door. Quickly I ran after her down the hallway, letting her keep a distance between us for the first couple of minutes. She took the staircase I had come up and just as I started down she went into the darker staircase in the middle of the wall.
Quickly I followed behind searching for a light switch the entire time, which slowed me down a little. When I entered the room, it was the brightly lit kitchen. “Ruby... where are you?” I asked sweetly as I moved around the island. Listening carefully I heard a giggle echo coming from the lobby.
Jogging into the front entry room, did I trip and fall flat on my face. When I rolled over and looked up at the ceiling, suddenly a hysterical Ruby was straddling my stomach looking down at me.
“I win” She celebrated like a little girl.
“Who?” I asked and folded my arms over my chest and stared up at her. Her laughing started to subside.
“Me, who else?” She started seriously, crossing her arms as well.
“Well then, does the winner want anything for a prize?” I asked as I lifted her off of me and got up. She got to her feet as well and brushed off the nonexistent dirt.
“Maybe... oh I know...” She said then got excited but she looked more nervous than anything else. I raised an eyebrow, curious about what she would want.
“Make it up to me from... yesterday.” At first I was confused, then I remembered the almost kiss. I rejected her and I don’t even know how to. I was a jerk for doing that. But if I had the permission I have now, I would have kissed her.
“And how would you like for me to do that?” I was sure after yesterday that she wouldn’t want me to even touch her, let alone kiss her. So I was expecting something silly or for her to humiliate me in some way.
Ruby turned towards me, so she was facing the front of the house. Since my shoulder was in line with her, I turned as well to face her, waiting to know what she wanted. “The thing I want is something which makes me think I am crazy, possibly getting into something all over again, way too quickly.” She takes a couple of steps towards me, which confuses me in a sense so I step back. Ruby smiled slightly almost as if this was a game, so when she tried again to get closer I moved with her in sync but there was still a foot between us.
Finally the wall behind me brushes against my shirt and I’m trapped. Ruby moves in so we are toe to toe, me looking down and her looking up. With the huge height difference, I smirked with that advantage but I didn’t want to try to move. So I put one hand on her neck and cupped it softly, “You sure you want this one thing?” Maybe I was wrong, unless she was trying to get me back and was going to reject me at the last second.
Ruby nodded very lightly and closed her eyes so I knew the rest was up to me... taking a deep breath, then leaning in and using my hand to make her tilt her face a little more up. Inching closer I was waiting for her to stop me or say something but not once did she and when she could feel my breath on her face she moved in and pressed her lips against mine so gently.
