Chapter 19
I waited and waited for the police to show up but after only thirty minutes I couldn’t take it any longer. This ‘James’ guy could be doing anything to her... quickly I got out of my car and walked over, this place had bad guards or no guards. I went in the door and hid in the shadows.
I watched silently at the exchange between a boy and girl. They were both mad at each other and the older man only interrupted a couple of times. When I tried to get closer, I tripped over something and my hand slapped the steel wall which vibrated and made a low groaning noise.
I stayed still afraid they heard me. “Will both of you shut up! I think I heard something...” My breath caught in my throat and I knew I couldn’t waste anymore time. I continued to move along the wall as the three of them looked around; their eyes didn’t scan the wall I was against though.
When they all were looking the other way, I charged after hearing, “James there is nothing there.” From the girl. I rushed at the older man and caught him just as he looked at me.
We tumbled to the ground and wrestled to get the advantage. For a middle aged man, he was actually pretty strong. Finally I pinned him down but just as I was going to punch him, the other guy grabbed me from behind. Threw me to the floor; quickly, I tried to get to my feet. He punched my jaw which shocked me with how much force was behind it.
“Nice.” I said then grabbed him by the throat and pushed him against a beam. He struggled a little, but was losing air quickly. The older man, who was James, came up behind me and almost kicked me in the back but with my other hand I grabbed his ankle and twisted it so he fell.
“Let go of my brother!” The girl yelled and ran at me, jumping on my back. It threw me off balance and we fell. I made sure not to land on her. Her brother coughed a little then picked the girl off of me like a child. James jumped on me and punched me a couple of times. I only got in one left hook before the door burst open and we heard, “Put your hands up!” James stopped to look behind him, which I took the chance to really hit him, he went down cold.
I got up and glared at the guy I now realized was Adam, “Where is she?” I got in his face.
“Chris, I told you we would handle it!” I heard Officer Mark’s voice echo. “Now, get outside before I put you behind bars too...” He ordered. I sighed, having my fist clenched.
The last thing I heard Adam say was, “I’ll bring her to you.” With that I hurried out and heard Officer Mark telling his boys to move in.
Forest POV
I don’t care how much I hate my brother but this guy was attaching him and James. I watched as the guy grabbed my brother and pushed him against a beam. James was right there, ready to help.
I had thought at first it was Kevin but now after a minute of watching I knew it wasn’t just someone who looked like him. It had to be Chris, his older brother, the one that called. We should have expected him to come, luckily he came alone.
Once I realized Adam was losing breath I couldn’t take it, I shouted at Chris to leave him alone and jumped on him. We toppled over but he shifted so he was on the bottom. I couldn’t fight him so I just kind of sat on him waiting for something to happen.
I heard Adam cough then I was plucked off of Chris. James went back at Chris and got in a few good shots. His lip was bleeding and he would have a black eye most likely. A sudden loud bang echoed through the room, many officers with guns ran in and surrounded us.
“Put your hands up!” A man yelled and my eyes went wide. We really should have expected this... Chris is not stupid to come alone, just to start without them. I heard a thump and turned my head to see James lying on the floor unconscious.
The same officer talked to Chris then he ran from the building like he was told. Once he was out, the officer stepped forward and spoke to us, “Now what are you two doing here today? Do you work for James here?” He pointed to James still asleep on the floor. I nodded but Adam started running back towards the door he had come from a few minutes ago.
People started shooting at him but missed as he closed the door behind him. “He is in a closet, no need to panic, unless there is a weapon in there...” They all looked around at each other, then back at me.
“Can you come forward slowly and put your hands where we can see them? What’s your name?” He asked as I did what I was told.
“Forest, and that was Adam my brother.” I didn’t want to tell them but I knew I couldn’t do anything because I didn’t want to die. Once I was in the line of mostly men, one guy put his gun away and hand cuffed me and led me out as I heard a door open...
Ruby POV
I hated being in this room, I couldn’t hear anything going on outside, just a bunch of muffles. I waited for someone to realize where I was or for James to come back, there wasn’t anything I could do stuck like this...
The door opened and I heard many gun shots. Adam closed the door, breathing a little heavy, and looked at me. He started playing with my hands. “Not you too... get out! James has done enough already...” I started feeling tears welled up in my eyes.
“He touched you?” He asked shocked, my wrists were suddenly loose and I moved my arms but they were very stiff and sore.
“Yes...” I closed my eyes as a tear escaped. “How could you bring me to him?” I asked without understanding.
“I’m so, so, so sorry Ruby, I didn’t think you would be so tough to break with everything.” He went and unhooked my feet as well and pressed the button which lowered me into a seated position again.
“Well maybe you won’t think that about a girl, now.... I trusted you. You had all of it and now you have none.” I started and tried to stand but fell back into the seat.
“The cops are here now and James will be going to jail. Can you trust me enough to carry you out to Chris?” I asked. Her eyes lit right up as she looked at me.
“He’s here?”
“Yes, and he took on James and myself at once. I don’t know how he found out my plan but he did.” Adam smiled and picked me up, huddling my body against his chest. “Okay, when I open the door, don’t say anything.” I nodded and leaned into him. He opened the door and I heard gun shots that were very loud.
“Don’t shoot! I’m coming out and I don’t want Ruby to get hurt!” Adam yelled, then waited a moment. Taking a step out of the room, he looked around at all the people. There were two cops around someone, who looked like James, on the floor.
Adam showed everyone that I was in his arms, I tried to muster up a smile but there wasn’t much of one. He then said, “Can I have two police escort me outside? She doesn’t want to be touched by anyone but myself and Chris and a paramedic.”
“You two do it.” An officer pointed to two cops who did what he wanted. They walked out of the building and I had to close my eyes tightly when the sun touched my face. “Search the place!” I heard the same man yell just before the door closed....
Kevin POV
I struggled against the huge guy but he didn’t seem affected. He finally stopped walking and opened a room. He threw me on the floor, shut the door and left. I tried opening it but the door wouldn’t budge. There were echoes of yelling, people talking. I paced around the room wondering how long I would be here. I really hoped Chris got the message.
I hoped Ruby was okay because for all I knew he could have killed her already. It wouldn’t be like a major downfall but I did care about her a lot. Life has never been easy for her… I still don’t know when it all started in her life...
Suddenly there were some yelling and hitting noises. Who was beating who? “I want to see the fight...” I whined slightly like a girl. What is wrong with me? I started yelling too and hanging on the door. “Help! Someone get me out of here!” But no one came. I stood there and waited hoping that someone was here to help...
I didn’t want to know what James would do to someone like me. Even if I didn’t know anything, he seemed scary with all the power. He knew what he was doing obviously.
A bang echoed through the hall and into my room. There was more yelling then a minute later gun shots, I think. There was a lot of mumbling going on which I guessed was talking but couldn’t be sure. It never echoed enough for me to hear.
I finally sat down on the cold hard ground, knowing I might be here for a while. Some people ran towards the entrance or lobby area in a hurry and shoots rang out. I just waited knowing that someone would stop here and see me, or James would and do whatever to me, which I’m guessing is not pleasant.
I heard footsteps but didn’t move from my spot, it was probably just someone from James crew. They were almost at my door, and I was bored but also nervous of who it might be.
Light flashed over my face and I closed my eyes, “Can you get that thing out of my face you creep?” I asked.
“Sorry, glad to see you’re okay though.” A woman said.
“Huh?” I was confused why someone of James’ would state that...
“Oh sorry, I’m officer Mac. Here I’ll help you out and we will get you to someone, make sure everything is okay.” She smiled now that I could see her face.
I got to my feet and she let me out of the room. Placing her hand on my back, we walked out together. There were many cop cars in the large parking lot and a couple of ambulances. I could see Forest in the back of a car with her head down. The second person I noticed was Chris sitting on the back of an ambulance with Ruby beside him. Paramedics were looking after them. I went over to the other ambulance and told the people I was fine, but they did a quick check over.
Adam POV
I placed her on the edge of the ambulance and whispered in the ear of the male
Paramedic, “Just a warning, Ruby has been abused before this event.” I stood there watching them check her over for certain things, like broken bones or major cuts.
“Adam?” A male voice came behind me. I turned around to see Chris with his arms crossed. “You actually care about her, but why did you bring her into this?” We were far enough away so Ruby couldn’t hear us easily.
“I have been doing this for years... I almost didn’t go through with it. Because this was the first time I was emotionally attached. I know how to separate my feelings and my job, but for once this wasn’t easy…”
Chris nodded and said one last thing, “Thanks for bringing her out.” He smiled at me, then a cop came over and led me to a car. There was no point; I knew I was in there for life or close to, for helping James get people and not stopping him.
James was loaded into the back of a car, looking still unconscious. I sighed knowing I would miss life but was glad it finished before Ruby was hurt more than she was. If James had murdered her like planned, after he got what he wanted I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.
The officer didn’t bother putting hand cuffs on me, just opened the car door and let me get in myself. They drove away as someone walked out with a cop. He looked like Chris but wasn’t obviously. I nodded at him, but he was looking at the car almost beside this one. I could see the back of Forest’s head, as she sat there patiently. I wondered how long she would be in jail for...
Chris POV
Adam was escorted away and I made my way over to Ruby as they placed a blanket over her shoulders. I had already been checked over and other than a little bruising and the cut on my lip I was good to go. “Hey.” I said gently.
“Hi.” She looked up at me, eyes widened, “What happened to your face?” I laughed a little.
“Thanks. Didn’t think I looked that bad.” She blushed her pretty face all bruised, let alone with other parts.
“Sorry, just your eyes and lips. Who did you fight?” She asked.
“James and Adam.” I stated simply and shrugged. “How much damage did he do to you?” I asked, I needed to know.
“They are not done looking me over but I am getting a bunch of tests when we go to the hospital. They want to make sure that this event and past events haven’t damaged anything serious.” She tried to smile.
“It’s all over now, right? Don’t need to worry.” She nodded and put her hand on mine. Her wrist was black and blue; I tried my best to hide the surprise and worried look on my face. She didn’t need to know and she could tell me all about it when she is ready.
“I think they want to take me now. I’ll be out in a few days... you staying in town?” She asked me.
“I will, I’ll come visit as soon as I can.” I leaned over and kissed her forehead very lightly. She smiled.
“Good take care of your face, I’d rather see the real Chris, than this beat up one.” I laughed and turned my head to see Kevin walking to us. “I think he wants to talk to you.” Ruby stated and nodded at a paramedic, “I’ll see you soon.”
“Ruby I’m glad you’re safe,” She blinked then nodded at Kevin.
“Come visit me at the hospital some time, I’ll be around.” With that she was helped into the back of the ambulance and they drove away. I moved away and turned around to see Kevin looking around then at me. Neither of us knew what to say. So I moved towards him and didn’t stop walking until my arms were tightly wrapped around him. He didn’t move at first but then hugged me back. We stood there, just hugging for a minute then moved away.
“You still hate me?” I asked hoping for a certain answer.
“No, I’m glad you called and told me everything.”
“Did anyone hurt you while in there?” I was curious about his health.
“No, I was there maybe twenty to forty minutes. So don’t even worry about me.” He smiled. “So you and Ruby?” He asked curiously.
“I guess. We had only been in contact a couple of times since everything happened that Friday, that’s how I knew what was happening...” Kevin nodded.
“Here, we should get going, the police are going to want to talk. You take your car and I’ll take Ruby’s. We can meet at the station.” I nodded and smiled.
“Thanks bro.” I headed to my car and drove away, seeing Kevin in Ruby’s car following me the entire way.
